Der Letzte Mann
Aus dem Heldenkampf in der Seeschlacht bei den Falklandsinseln am 8. Dezember 1914. Nach dem Gemälde von Professor Hans Bohrdt

Sie haben gefochten eins zu vier,
Nun zieht sie der Tod ins kühle Revier.
Sie haben gefochten vier zu eins,
Die Helden im Strahl des Ewigenscheins.
Nun brennt das Schiff an Bug und Heck,
Die Mannschaft steht auf Vorderdeck.
Und wie sie in die Tiefe sinkt,
Greift sie zur Mütze und grüßt und schwingt,
Bis daß von Fluten begraben die Hand,
Hurra dem Kaiser und Vaterland!
Als sich vollendet das Geschick,
Kieloben treibt’s einen Augenblick
Und reckt noch einmal den wunden Rumpf
Und gurgelt hohl und gurgelt dumpf.
Da plötzlich aus der Meeresflut
Taucht ein Matrose, ein junges Blut,
Der hält über See in höchster Not
In der Rechten die Flagge schwarz-weiß-rot.
Mit ihr erklimmt er das brodelnde Wrack,
Fest steht er, ein Fels, standhaft und strack,
Er schwingt mit kräftiger Seemannshand
Noch einmal die Flagge fürs Vaterland.
Und als der Rumpf in die Fluten versinkt,
Mit beiden Händen die Fahne er schwingt.
Und als die Welle den Kopf bedeckt,
Aus dem Wasser ein Arm noch die Fahne streckt.
Er läßt sie nicht, er nimmt sie hinein;
Sie soll auch im Tod sein Begleiter sein.

They have fought one to four,
Now, death draws you into a cool area.

The heroes in the ray of eternal light.
Now the ship is burning on the bow and stern,
The team is on the front deck.
And as she sinks into the depths,
Take her to the cap and greet and swing,
Until that of floods buried the hand,
Hurray to the emperor and fatherland!
When the fate,
Kieloben drives a moment
And again stretch the sore hull
And gurgles hollow and gurgles.
Because suddenly from the sea tide
If a sailor, a young blood,
He is holding the sea in extreme need
In the right the flag black-white-red.
With her he climbs the seething wreck,
If he stands, a rock, firm and stracked,
He swings with a strong sailor’s hand
Once again the flag for the fatherland.
And when the trunk sinks into the floods,
With both hands the flag he swings.
And when the wave covers the head,
From the water an arm still stretches the flag.
He does not leave her, he takes you in;
She is also to be his companion in death.
