Mutter, Deine harten Hände,
Die daheim im Hause walten,
Möchte ich voll Dank umfalten,
Möcht mich wie ein Pilger neigen,
Brünstig betend drüber schweigen,
Wie ich wohl vorm Schöpfer stände.

Heut ist der Mutter Ehrentag;
Gedenke ihrer heute!
Sie, die sich sorget früh und spat,
Bereit´ ihr eine Freude!
Sie denket, wenn der Tag anbricht,
An dich, bis in die späte Nacht;
Und es verklärt sich ihr Gesicht
Durch ihrer Liebe zarte Macht.
Sollt dir´s im Leben schlecht mal gehn,
Wirst du verfolgt, verstoßen,
Dann wird die Mutter zu dir stehn
Und tröstend dich liebkosen.
Drum überlege, eh´s zu spät,
was dir die Mutter ist!
Du merkst erst, wenn sie einstmals geht,
Daß Du verlassen bist!

Heiterkeit
So höre denn zu und gib wohl acht,
Wie man die Heiterkeit braut und macht;
Denn nicht eine jede ist recht und rein,
Doch diese, sie hilft für jegliche Pein. –
Zuerst schau ins Herz dir und spül’ es recht aus
Und wasch’ alle Selbstsucht gründlich heraus.
Dann nimm die Geduld und die Nachsicht zur Hand
Und schüttle sie um mit etwas Verstand.
Ein Tröpfchen Vergessen tu’ auch dabei,
Es macht von vergangenem Weh dich frei.
Nicht Leichtsinn, doch leichten Sinn rühr hinein,
Ein Körnchen Witz, doch gerieben ganz fein!
Viel guter Wille und feste Kraft
Und Menschenliebe, die wirkt und schafft.
Auch etwas Selbstvertrauen und Mut,
Bescheidnes Hoffen und ruhiges Blut.
Dies alles rühre zusammen fein
Und nimm es mit reinem Herzen ein.
Und klopft es dennoch und will nicht zur Ruh,
So blicke bittend nach oben dazu.
Du wirst es sehen, es kommt dir der Mut,
Und alles Andre wird wieder gut;
Die Träne trocknet, das Auge lacht,
Und doch weiß niemand, wie du es gemacht.
